Libraries give ways to explore the Colorado State Parks

Paonia State Park #checkoutcolorado

Last fall, the Rifle Branch Library was one of eight pilot locations in Colorado to participate in the Check-Out Colorado State Parks Program. The program stemmed from a collaboration between the Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado State Library. Based on the success of the program, all six Garfield County Libraries (and over 280 other libraries across the state) will now be able to participate!

The Check-Out Colorado State Parks Program offers residents the ability to check-out an adventure backpack. Inside the backpack you’ll find binoculars, park information, and a Colorado State Park Pass which grants entrance into all 42 state parks.Library State Park Backpacks

“An adventure backpack (has) everything you need to explore and enjoy Colorado’s parks on your own or with friends and family” said CPW Director Bob Broscheid.

All six Garfield County Libraries now have two adventure backpacks, which can be checked out for up to seven days. Each library has one backpack which can be reserved by putting a hold on it with your library card. The second backpack at each library is a “lucky day” item that can only be checked out if you see it on the shelf. All adult members of the Garfield County Libraries can check out and use the backpacks, but they must be returned to library where they are checked out.

“We encourage all Coloradans to explore and learn through their libraries,” said Colorado State Library Development Director, Sharon Morris. “This pass and backpack program gives residents the opportunity to literally “check out Colorado State Parks” and discover the wildlife and beauty of our state.”
