Exciting Changes in Store for 2020

As we look ahead to a brand new year, it’s easy to see there are exciting things in store for our libraries. The passage of our ballot measure last year will allow us to bring back open hours and enhance library services throughout our area. Here are some of the things you can expect in the near future.

More Books

You may have already noticed more new books arriving at your local library. We are actively engaged in purchasing more bestsellers so we can significantly reduce how long anyone has to wait for the book they want. Throughout the year, we will continue to invest in creating a collection of books that meet the needs of our community. If you have any suggestions please fill out the “Suggest a Purchase” form at the bottom of any search of our online catalog OR talk with a staff member at your local library.

Expanded eBook and eAudiobook Selections

Demand for electronic materials continues to increase here in Garfield County. Whether you listen to audiobooks during your commute or are excited to load up your new tablet with books, you will see a much larger selection of titles available now, and continue to expand throughout the year.

Electronic Comics

Exciting news for all comic book fans! RBdigital Comics will become available in the next two months for anyone with one of our library cards. Unlike most ebooks, these comics can be read by multiple users are a time, and you won’t have to wait for someone else to “return” the comic you want to read. All you have to do is find a comic you want in the library’s online catalog and start reading!

Streaming Video

Our libraries will add streaming movies and videos by spring! Your library card will grant you free access to both Kanopy and Hoopla - two of the most popular providers of streaming videos for libraries.

High-Quality Events

Through thick and thin our libraries have remained community gathering places where community members of all ages and backgrounds can gather to learn, explore, and connect. We are currently planning events for adults for the first quarter of 2020 around two main themes: “Keeping History Alive” and “Working Communities.” Be on the lookout for even more high-quality offerings as we get farther into the year.

Better Computers

For the past few years, our libraries have had to cut back on the number of computers available, as well as defer replacing extremely old machines due to lack of funding. Thankfully, we can now bring back some computers, and replace the ones in need so that everyone can have access to the technology required for today’s modern world.

Expanded Library Hours

We are currently working on implementing expanded open hours by laying the groundwork for this to occur. We must hire additional staff for all six of our locations in order to accommodate the added hours. Then, we must train these new employees so they can deliver the high-quality support we expect at Garfield County Libraries. Both of these activities will take time to do well. While we will be striving to hit each milestone as quickly as possible, please be patient as we work through the process. And, when you begin to see new faces behind the desk at your local library please take the time to smile and welcome them to the team.

We anticipate being able to implement the new hours schedule in late spring or early summer.

This is just a brief overview of what’s to come in 2020. Please stay tuned throughout the year as we share more details as they emerge. We are so excited about these changes and additions and how they will positively affect our community!
