 Summer Reading 2012

The 2012 Summer Reading Program will start June 11th and continue through August 4th. This year's program continues our Read Every Dary (RED) format encouraging everyone to read at least 20 minutes each day.  For every 5 days of reading, you receive a Book Buck as well as an entry into our prize drawings. There will be weekly drawings as well as an end-of-summer drawing for a Nook Color at each branch! You can complete up to 8 reading logs bookmarks this summer. The more you read, the better your chances of winning! So register today and pick up your first reading log bookmark on (or after) June 11th. Sign up for RED here!

Alex Project

The American Library Association (ALA) says: "The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The winning titles are selected from the previous year's publishing. The Alex Awards were first given annually beginning in 1998 and became an official ALA award in 2002." You can learn more on ALA's Alex Awards page.

Karol Sacca, our Parachute Branch Manager, took this idea and ran with it. The result? The Alex Project.

The Alex Project is designed to build connections in our community using the power of a great read. Very simply, the project pairs teens and adults from the community. Each pair reads an Alex Award-winning title and compares opinions, usually via email.

The Alex Project is now available at all six Garfield County Libraries! Click to learn more.

TAG & TAB

Teen Advisory Groups (TAGs) are groups of teens who advise (didn't see that coming, did ya?) our librarians on stuff that teens like. Joining TAG means that you can have your say on everything teen-related at your library, from planning programs and events to suggesting which books, movies, and games the library buys. And, who are we kidding, it's also a good excuse to hang out with some fun people and eat free food. Most TAGs meet once a month, so there's not a huge time commitment, but your involvement can have a big impact on your local library.

Gordon Cooper Branch (Carbondale) - TAG meets every third Monday of the month from 4-5 pm - call the branch at 963-2889 for more information.

Glenwood Springs Branch - TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meets every second Tuesday of the month from 4-5 pm - call the branch at 945-5958 for more information.

Book Clubs and More

In addition to the traditional book club, many of our branch libraries have clubs specialized for different groups or interests, like gaming or art. Don't forget to check our calendar for meetings and events; apply the "Teens" age filter to narrow down the calendar's listings.

"Drawing Manga and Comics" - Teens and manga artists, join your peers at the New Castle Branch Library to learn techniques and share your talents. Bring a pencil, paper and your imaginations. All levels are acceptable. The manga club meets at the library every Wednesday at 4:30 pm. For more information, contact the branch at 984-2346.

Tween Book Club - The Glenwood Springs Branch Library has a book club especially for students in middle school, too. The club meets on the third Thursday of each month from 4-5 p.m. For more information on the book club and to find out which title they're reading this month, contact the Glenwood Springs Branch at 945-5958.

The Teen Book Club and Teen Video Game Club won't be meeting again until further notice as we make changes to our youth programming at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library. If you enjoy these clubs and want to see them return - or if you have any other great ideas for teen programs! - please tell Karen (the Youth Services Librarian) or Pat (the Branch Manager) at the Glenwood Springs Branch. You can reach the branch by phone at 945-5958.

"Teen Reads" - The Rifle Branch Library's book club for teens meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. For more info, contact Amy at the library at 625-3471.

Wii Wednesdays - The Rifle Branch Library holds open play gaming every Wednesday after school. So bring your friends, neighbors, sisters, and brothers down to the library and grab a controller. We'll be playing at the Rifle Branch from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. For more info, call the Rifle Branch at 625-3471.
