Let's Review!

If you don't remember the answers to some of the quiz questions you may need to look at your notes from the activities, review the pages, or make another trip through the library!

When you've finished, your supervisor will want to review your activities and this quiz with you. You may then print a certificate of completion to be signed by your supervisor and the Library Director.

Good luck!

Take the quiz

(You may print the quiz questions before you start.)

1. State your library's mission or purpose in your own words. Then describe how your job contributes to fulfilling the library mission.

2. List the 10 Main Classes of the Dewey Decimal Classification and briefly explain why library materials are classified.

3. List all the places in your library where users can find classified non-fiction.

4. Are there separate sections in your library for fiction and non-fiction DVDs? Are the DVDs classified?

5. Some libraries shelve non-fiction DVDs with books on the same topic (i.e. by classification number). What is an advantage of putting books and DVDs on the same topic on the shelves together? What is a disadvantage?

6. If you look up a book in the catalog, but only write down the top lines of the call number (REF 025.32 for example), will you be able to find one specific book? Explain.

7. What are the main technical services necessary for your library to provide good customer service?

8. If you have questions about an Interlibrary Loan, a missing magazine, a catalog entry (item record), and a computer problem, who would be the right people to talk to in your library?

9. What are the main public services provided in your library? What services are provided on the Web?

10. Who may look at patron records in your library?

What Now?

That's it! You made it through the New Employee Orientation. You now have a general idea about what happens in your library. Over the next few weeks (or years, or decades), you will continue to learn about the best way to be part of providing great library service in your community.

Now that you're ready to work in the library, you may want to familiarize yourself with Colorado State Library news! Did you know that Public Library use has increased during the recession. Check out the article!
