Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the questions we commonly receive from potential tutors.

What would I be doing as a tutor?
Volunteer tutors provide weekly instruction in one of the following basic skills: reading, writing, math, or English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Volunteers also help students with skills related to personal literacy needs and goals such as letter writing or job applications. Generally tutors are placed with an adult student and work in a one-on-one or small group situation. Volunteers do not need to speak a foreign language.

Conversation Circle

This program is designed to offer new English-speaking residents a place to feel safe using their new language and to offer them a place to be a community among friends. It is very important to note that these groups are not intended to usurp any English as a Second Language classes (ESL) in the area: in fact, they are designed to work in tandem by offering a place and a chance for ESL students to practice what they are learning. Classes run continuously. The times run from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, with the less fluent classes having the least time.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest speller of them all?

Once upon a time there was an annual event called Spellebration that continues to this day, bringing lovers of literacy and adult education together for an evening of magic and mayhem with an old-fashioned adult spelling bee and silent auction. This year, we will gather at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Enchanted Forest we know as Aspen Glen, where spellers will compete for bragging rights as the best spellers in Garfield County and all attending will be spellbound by the merriment, the festive ambiance, and the enticements of the silent auction.
