Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest speller of them all?

Once upon a time there was an annual event called Spellebration that continues to this day, bringing lovers of literacy and adult education together for an evening of magic and mayhem with an old-fashioned adult spelling bee and silent auction. This year, we will gather at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Enchanted Forest we know as Aspen Glen, where spellers will compete for bragging rights as the best spellers in Garfield County and all attending will be spellbound by the merriment, the festive ambiance, and the enticements of the silent auction.

Teams of three are forming now!  Deadline to enter is March 9.  Everyone can join in this spelling contest. 

Are you afraid of being a troll and misspelling a word?  You can purchase Word Passes to exile a difficult word and try a new word.  Or you can ask the Fairy Godmother who would love to spell for you if you get a real poisoned apple of a word.  Services of the Fairy Godmother will cost two passes during the first two rounds and the number will increase with each subsequent round, i.e., three passes during round 3, four passes during round 4, etc.  But don’t be a Sleeping Beauty: buy Word Passes ahead of time because they cost more once the spelling starts.

Literacy Outreach and the Colorado Mountain College (CMC) Learning Labs transform the lives of many people in our community.  In 2011, Literacy Outreach provided help to 142 adult students in their quest to become proficient in reading and writing English.  That same year CMC Learning Labs in Glenwood Springs and Carbondale helped more than 40 students earn either their GED or Adult High School Diploma. Improved literacy skills and higher education positively affect students’ families and places of employment, spreading like magic to improve our whole community.
